country needs something new. The problems associated with food and
energy still vex us, but this only because food and energy, or indeed
the essentials of life, are not
part
of our upbringing and education. PROBLEMS Control food and energy and you control people . . . all the rest is a footnote. For most this is the road to despair; for the few this is the route to power and oppression. The status quo is maintained. In the circumstances, Food & Energy (FE), which account for the essentials of life (no less!), are made to play no part whatsoever in our upbringing and education. We all lose out. Learning is forsaken. SOLUTIONS For solutions, phase in FE. What's involved here is that we put FE top of our social agenda and make it the baseline for learning. The aim of New Literacy is to facilitate this process. This aim rests upon the following considerations :
New Literacy makes a compelling case for this education. Based on essentials, this education can only result in lasting benefits. Literacy as proposed is universal. FE is a given. It would be up to us to make FE the centrepiece of human knowledge and of a joyful and compassionate living.
